Language Requirements for Canada PR:

A Guide to IELTS, PTE Core, CELPIP, TEF and TCF

When applying for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) through popular immigration programs like Express Entry, one of the essential requirements is proving your proficiency in either English or French. Language proficiency demonstrates your ability to communicate effectively and integrate into Canadian society. Canada accepts various language tests to meet this requirement, including IELTS General, PTE Core, CELPIP, TEF, and TCF.

IELTS General Training (International English Language Testing System)

The IELTS General test is one of the most widely accepted language proficiency tests for Canada PR applications. It assesses your ability to communicate in English, focusing on listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Listening: 30 minutes

Reading: 60 minutes

Writing: 60 minutes

Speaking: 11-14 minutes (interview format)

Scoring: IELTS scores range from 0 to 9, with each band representing different proficiency levels. To meet the Express Entry program requirements, a minimum CLB 7 is typically required, which corresponds to a score of 6.0 in each section.

PTE Core (Pearson Test of English)

The PTE Core is an English language proficiency test designed for general use, such as education, work, or migration. Unlike the PTE Academic, the PTE Core is tailored to test general English language skills and is accepted by Canadian immigration authorities for PR applications. It evaluates your proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and is recognized by IRCC as part of the language requirement for Express Entry and other Canadian immigration programs.

Speaking & Writing: 77 minutes

Reading: 32-41 minutes

Listening: 45-57 minutes

Scoring: PTE Core scores range from 10 to 90, with higher scores indicating greater language proficiency. A CLB 7 level (which corresponds to a 50-58 score in each section) is typically required for Express Entry.

CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)

The CELPIP General test is fully computer-based, including the speaking section, and is specifically designed for Canada immigration purposes. It evaluates your proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Listening: 47 minutes

Reading: 55 minutes

Writing: 53 minutes

Speaking: 15-20 minutes

Scoring: CELPIP scores range from 1 to 12, and to meet the CLB 7 requirement, you need to score 7 or higher in each section. CELPIP is one of the most popular tests for applicants to the Express Entry program.

TEF (Test d’évaluation de français)

If you are proficient in French, the TEF is the official test accepted by IRCC to evaluate your French language skills. It assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, and it is primarily required for those applying for the Federal Skilled Worker Program or those who wish to earn additional points under the Express Entry system.

Listening: 40 minutes

Reading: 60 minutes

Writing: 60 minutes

Speaking: 15 minutes

Scoring: The TEF uses a scale from 0 to 900 points. To meet the CLB 7 requirement, you will need a score of 229-300 points in listening and reading. A higher score can improve your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points in Express Entry.

TCF (Test de connaissance du français)

Another widely accepted French language proficiency test is the TCF. It evaluates the four main language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Listening: 25 minutes

Reading: 35 minutes

Writing: 30 minutes

Speaking: 12-15 minutes

Scoring: TCF scores range from 0 to 800, and for a CLB 7, you’ll need a score of about 226 or higher in listening and reading.

Which Language Test Should You Take for Canada PR?

Your choice of language test will depend on your proficiency in English or French, and your specific immigration program.

For English-Speaking Applicants:

  1. IELTS General: Most commonly accepted for Canada PR.
  2. PTE Core: If you prefer a test with faster results.
  3. CELPIP: A good choice if you prefer a fully computer-based test.

For French-Speaking Applicants:

TEF or TCF: Both are accepted by IRCC for French language proficiency and can help you earn additional CRS points for Express Entry.

For Bilingual Applicants:

If you are proficient in both English and French, taking both English and French language tests can maximize your CRS score under Express Entry, boosting your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
